5 things to do (and not do) after an IRS lien

Back to lien help
  1. Open every IRS letter. The notice title and date tell you how far collection has gone and which appeal deadlines apply.
  2. Don’t ignore deadlines on levy or hearing notices. Letters offering a Collection Due Process hearing usually give 30 days, and that right is valuable.
  3. File any missing tax returns. The IRS generally won’t agree to a payment plan or settlement until you’re current on filing.
  4. Be careful with “pennies on the dollar” promises. Offers in compromise exist, but many people don’t qualify, and no one can promise an outcome before reviewing your records.
  5. Don’t move or hide assets. It can make your situation much worse. Get advice first.
